Proton Mail Review (2026)
Proton Mail is the gold standard for private email, using end-to-end encryption so that not even Proton can read your messages. Based in Switzerland under strict privacy laws, it's the best defense against email-based identity theft, data broker harvesting, and surveillance.

Key Features
End-to-End Encryption
All messages are encrypted on your device before sending — only the recipient can decrypt them.
Tracking Pixel Blocking
Automatically strips email tracking pixels that reveal your IP address and location to senders.
Swiss Privacy Law
Proton is incorporated in Switzerland, which has some of the world's strongest privacy protections.
Self-Destructing Messages
Set an expiration time on sensitive emails — they are permanently deleted after the timer expires.
Our Verdict
Proton Mail is the most important privacy upgrade most people can make. Standard email providers like Gmail scan your messages to build advertising profiles — and those profiles can be purchased by data brokers and used in targeted scams. Proton Mail's end-to-end encryption closes that door entirely. The free plan is sufficient for most users.
